Transition from Primary
Entrance Exams
At Coláiste Éamann Rís, we aim to make the transition from primary to secondary school as smooth and welcoming as possible. Our entrance exam takes place while students are in Sixth Class and is designed to help us get to know each child ahead of starting with us in September.
On the day, students not only complete their assessments but also get a chance to meet future classmates and become familiar with the school environment. We finish the day with a party to celebrate this exciting step and to help students feel more relaxed and confident about the journey ahead.
It’s the first of many memories they’ll make as part of our school community.
First Day of School Celebration
We believe the first day of secondary school should be a special and memorable one, for both students and their families. To mark the occasion, we host a warm and welcoming celebration for our incoming First Years at the end of August.
Families are invited to join us for a day filled with fun, including a BBQ, bouncy castles and games that help students settle in and make new friends. It’s also a great opportunity for parents and guardians to meet teachers, tutors and staff in a relaxed setting and begin building the strong home-school connection that supports each student’s success.
A Day In The Life Of A First Year
School starts at 8:45 a.m every day. Students should be in school no later than 8.40 a.m. Student attendance is recorded in each class on Tyro; parents/guardians are notified by absences by SMS. First year students have lockers located inside their classrooms to allow for a stress-free start to secondary school.
- 8:45 – 10:41 Students attend two 58-minute-long classes.
- 10:41 – 10:54 Students meet with their Class Tutor and have a mid-morning break.
- 11:07 – 13:03 Students attend two 58-minute-long lessons.
- 13:03 – 13:33 Lunch Break – students may NOT leave school. A free hot lunch is provided to all our students.
- 13:33 – 15:29 Students attend two 58-minute-long classes.
School concludes at 15.29 on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday and at 13.03 on Wednesdays.
First Year Bonding Trips
To help our First Years feel connected and part of the school community from the start, a bonding trip to West Cork Secrets is organised early in the school year. This fun-filled day out gives students the chance to get to know their classmates, build friendships and develop teamwork skills in a relaxed and active setting. It’s a great way to break the ice, boost confidence and create shared memories that set the tone for a positive and supportive school experience.
Grandparents Day
Every year during Catholic Schools Week, a Grandparents and Parents coffee morning is held. First Year grandparents and parents are invited into the school and have the opportunity to interact with staff, students and enjoy a collection of student work including poems, prayers and reflections.
